Old Trafford Crisis Puts Carrick’s Future Under Review

Hailey HughesHailey Hughes—October 28, 20260

Manchester United’s difficult campaign has placed Michael Carrick under intense scrutiny, with the club sitting 16th in the Premier League and only one point clear of the relegation places. An eight-match winless run has also pushed the search for a possible replacement into the spotlight.

A Collapse That Has Changed the Conversation

United’s latest setback came at Old Trafford, where Bournemouth secured a 3-0 victory on Sunday, October 25. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the visitors, while Bruno Fernandes remained on the bench throughout the contest.

The result arrived just four days after United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League. Reports indicated that Fernandes had questioned Carrick’s tactical approach after that match, but the captain was still excluded against Bournemouth. Carrick described the decision as being based purely on football considerations.

That result is a sharp contrast to United’s 4-0 win over Sabah in September. At the time, the club’s Champions League return appeared to signal a positive new chapter. The current run has made that optimism feel increasingly distant.

The Numbers Behind Carrick’s Pressure

United collected just six points from their opening six Premier League fixtures, their poorest start since 1986. Opta data also showed that seven points after seven matches had already represented the club’s lowest total at that stage of a Premier League campaign.

Carrick’s position is especially notable because he earned the permanent role after guiding United to third place last season and securing Champions League football. He signed that contract only about five months ago, making the present decline even more dramatic.

Supporters continued to sing Carrick’s name after the Bournemouth defeat, directing much of their frustration towards the board instead. Nevertheless, reports suggest that he will remain in charge for Saturday’s visit to Chelsea. That temporary continuation should not automatically be interpreted as firm backing from the club.

Conte Rejects Claims of Advanced Discussions

Antonio Conte has attempted to cool the speculation surrounding the vacancy. In an Instagram statement published on October 23, the Italian said that no negotiations with any club had reached an advanced stage and rejected reports that he was seeking complete control of football operations.

Conte has been out of work since leaving Napoli by mutual agreement on June 4. He won Serie A during his first season with the club before Napoli finished second in 2025-26, and he said that he would take time to decide when the right conditions existed for a return to management.

His record explains why he remains linked with major vacancies. Conte is reported to be the only manager to have won Serie A with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli. He also claimed the Premier League title with Chelsea in his first season, in 2016-17.

  • He delivered league titles at three different Italian clubs.
  • He won the Premier League with Chelsea during the 2016-17 campaign.
  • He has helped clubs make rapid improvements, including Chelsea and Napoli after both had previously finished 10th.

Why Conte Would Be a Risky Appointment

Conte’s achievements come with a clear concern: longevity. Juventus is reportedly the only club where he stayed beyond two seasons, while his other appointments lasted two seasons or less.

Former Inter player Ashley Young has also described the demanding nature of Conte’s methods. Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Young recalled post-defeat meetings that could continue for three or four hours and said some training sessions became “a little bit boring.”

That intensity could appeal to supporters who want a forceful change at Old Trafford, but it might also create friction within a club that has experienced repeated managerial changes. Paul Scholes has backed Conte, arguing on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast that the coach would need to arrive and impose strong standards immediately.

Potential Replacements at a Glance

Manager Present position Reason for United interest
Eddie Howe Available after leaving Newcastle on July 30 Reportedly favoured by football director Jason Wilcox
Julian Nagelsmann Available after spells with Germany and Bayern Munich Admired by recruitment chief Christopher Vivell
Antonio Conte Available after departing Napoli Elite trophy record and experience rebuilding clubs
Unai Emery Manager of Aston Villa Highly regarded, although a move could cost about £20 million

Current reports place Howe and Nagelsmann among the leading options if Carrick is dismissed, while Emery’s contract at Aston Villa would make his appointment more complicated. Conte remains part of the wider discussion, but his own statement indicates that no advanced agreement is in place.

The Chelsea Match Could Define the Next Step

Saturday’s fixture at Chelsea now carries more significance than a routine league match. Another defeat would extend United’s winless sequence and intensify calls for a change in the dugout.

Carrick’s supporters can point to last season’s third-place finish and the backing he still receives from sections of the crowd. The club’s poor opening, however, has created a situation in which the next Man Utd manager debate may quickly become an active search.
