McDavid’s Historic Start Powers Edmonton Past Calgary

Hailey HughesHailey Hughes—October 29, 20260

Connor McDavid added another landmark achievement to an already extraordinary career Wednesday night, helping the Edmonton Oilers defeat the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place. The Edmonton captain recorded two assists, including one that extended his season-opening assist streak to 13 games, establishing a new NHL record.

The milestone arrived in the first Battle of Alberta of the 2026–27 season. Edmonton also ended a two-game losing streak, while Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots he faced to complete the shutout.

A New Season-Opening Assist Record

McDavid began the game tied for the NHL record after registering an assist in each of Edmonton’s first 12 contests. The previous mark belonged jointly to Wayne Gretzky, Ken Linseman, and Sebastian Aho, who each reached 12 straight games with an assist at the beginning of a season.

  • Wayne Gretzky reached the mark during the 1982–83 campaign.
  • Ken Linseman matched it in 1985–86.
  • Sebastian Aho equaled the record in 2018–19.

McDavid moved into sole possession of the record when his pass helped Mathieu Joseph score the opening goal against Calgary. He later added a second assist on Kasperi Kapanen’s third-period power-play goal, giving him two helpers on the night.

Through October 28, McDavid had produced eight goals and 28 assists for 36 points in 13 games. That total placed him at the top of the NHL scoring race and underscored the breadth of his offensive influence.

Category Total
Games played 13
Goals 8
Assists 28
Points 36
Season-opening assist streak 13 games

The record also reflects McDavid’s value as a playmaker. His ability to draw defensive attention and find open teammates gives Edmonton several ways to attack, even when opponents concentrate on limiting his own scoring chances.

Edmonton Controls the Battle of Alberta

The Oilers entered the rivalry game needing a response after two consecutive losses. Calgary arrived with considerably more momentum, having won four games in a row and five of its previous six.

Instead of allowing the Flames to dictate the pace, Edmonton played a controlled game from the opening faceoff. The Oilers received goals from four different players and kept Calgary from creating sustained offensive pressure.

Joseph opened the scoring, and Mattias Ekholm later added to Edmonton’s lead. Kapanen scored on the power play early in the third period, while Alex Formenton completed the scoring. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contributed two assists as Edmonton’s secondary players supported McDavid’s production.

The result lifted the Oilers to 9-2-2 and stopped Calgary’s winning run. It also demonstrated that Edmonton can win convincingly without requiring McDavid to score every time he creates a dangerous opportunity.

Jarry Provides the Defensive Foundation

McDavid’s record understandably drew the most attention, but Jarry was equally central to the result. The Edmonton goaltender denied all 24 Calgary attempts for his first shutout of the season and the 24th of his NHL career.

Jarry’s work gave the Oilers room to play aggressively without sacrificing control in their own zone. Calgary generated chances, but none became a goal, and Edmonton maintained its clean sheet through the final horn.

Strong goaltending can be especially valuable for a team built around high-end offense. If Jarry continues to provide reliable performances, the Oilers will have a stronger foundation for difficult Western Conference games and tighter playoff-style matchups.

Injuries Add to Calgary’s Difficult Night

The Flames’ loss became more complicated when Devin Cooley left because of a lower-body injury late in the first period. Dustin Wolf took over in goal and made 20 saves in relief.

Calgary also lost forward Brennan Othmann to an upper-body injury. The combination of the result and the injuries overshadowed what had been a promising stretch for the Flames.

Calgary fell to 5-7-0, but the team still has an opportunity to prevent one rivalry loss from erasing the progress made during its four-game winning streak. A quick response will be essential when the Flames return home.

What the Result Says About Edmonton

Wednesday’s win offered more than two points in the standings. It showed the Oilers combining elite individual talent with contributions throughout the lineup.

  • Scoring depth: Four Edmonton players scored, reducing the pressure on McDavid’s line.
  • Reliable defense: Calgary was held to 24 shots and shut out for the entire game.
  • Special-teams impact: Kapanen’s power-play goal helped Edmonton turn control of the game into a comfortable lead.
  • Leadership: McDavid set a record while helping his team rebound from consecutive defeats.

That balance could become increasingly important as opponents adjust their plans for McDavid. When teams focus too heavily on the Oilers captain, Edmonton’s other forwards and defensemen can exploit the extra space.

Upcoming Games for Both Alberta Teams

Edmonton will travel to play the New York Islanders on October 31. The game gives McDavid another chance to extend his record-setting assist streak and gives the Oilers an opportunity to build on their home victory.

Calgary is scheduled to host the Seattle Kraken on October 30. The Flames will be looking for a sharper performance and hoping to regain the form that produced four consecutive wins before the trip to Edmonton.

McDavid’s next appearance will draw particular attention. He has already surpassed the previous season-opening assist record, but every additional game with a helper will make the new standard more difficult to challenge.

After 13 games, the Oilers captain has combined historic playmaking with league-leading production. Edmonton’s 4-0 victory showed why that individual brilliance becomes even more dangerous when the rest of the roster supplies goals and Jarry protects the crease.
